As much as 3,200 police officers could lose their jobs if all forces in England and Wales have mandatory retirement. The figures were revealed in a parliamentary answer by Theresa May, in response to a question from shadow Labour Minister Ed Balls.
Mandatory retirement rule is for those, who are 30 years of service and the police to cut costs. At least three police authorities have agreed in principle to use the rule.
These include Strathclyde, Scotland, while Greater Manchester Police said this week that it planned to use the rule known as Regulation A19.
A total of 3,260 is the cost of service more than 30 years' in England and Wales - including the 1154 and the Metropolitan Police, British Transport Police 244, 198 in the West Midlands, West Yorkshire, 126 and 122 in Merseyside.
Metropolitan Police Sir Paul Stephenson, the Commissioner said he did not use the power of the A19 - but without the sum of the Met is still higher than 2000.
