
Russia has agreed to cooperate with the NATO program for defense against ballistic missile attacks, the head of NATO said.
Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the NATO summit in Lisbon, that the parties have agreed in writing that they are no longer a threat to the other.
Rasmussen said the first time that both parties will cooperate to defend themselves.
Lisbon has been redesigned to focus on NATO's new challenges. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said at the summit: "
A period of very difficult, tense relations have been overcome." This is the first NATO summit, Russia has participated since the war between Russia and Georgia two years ago.
Nato members had earlier agreed on a programme to develop and deploy defences against ballistic missile attack on their territories.
