The use of men who underwent hair transplantation as guinea pigs, the team at the University of Pennsylvania patches of hair follicles to bald areas of scalp hair.
Although the bald areas had the same number of hair-making that normally the cells of the scalp, there was less of a type more mature progenitor cells.
This difference means that hair follicles in bald spots disappear and instead reduce further false hairs are microscopic compared to normal hair.
Dr. George Cotsarelis who led the research, said: "This implies that there is a problem in activating the conversion of stem cells bald.
"The fact that there is a normal number of stem cells in bald gives us the hope to reactivate these stem cells."
So far, it was clear what the exact cause of male pattern baldness is, but experts say the male hormone testosterone is involved, and baldness also tends to run in families.
